Logan International Airport (BOS) is located in East Boston, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. (The official name of BOS is Lt. General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport.) The airport is the largest in New England and is the 18th-busiest airport in the United States.
Serving as a focus city for JetBlue Airways and a hub for Delta Airlines, BOS has frequent service to destinations throughout North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Logan has seen recent growth in international traffic, with new routes added by airlines such as Emirates and Aeromexico.
Logan International Airport covers 2,384 acres and operates six runways. BOS handled over 28 million passengers in 2013 and almost 32 million in 2014. Employing an estimated 16,000 people, the airport serves as a major contributor to the economy of Boston and the surrounding region.

- When Logan Airport opened in 1923, it was mainly used by the Massachusetts Air Guard and the Army Air Corps. At the time, it was called Jeffery Field.
- When Logan’s Terminal E opened in 1974, it was the second-largest international arrivals facility in the United States. Since that time, international long-haul travel has been the fastest growing sector of the airport’s business.
- BOS has 103 gate positions spread across four terminals.
- Terminal A was opened in 2005 after replacing its 1970s-era predecessor. It was the first airport terminal in the United States to be LEED certified for environmentally-friendly design. Green features include heat-reflecting roof and windows, low-flow faucets, no-water urinals, and storm-water filtration.
- The airport has been undergoing renovations to connect all terminals post-security, allowing for faster transfers between flights. Renovations also include the addition of gates capable of serving the Airbus A380.
- Logan is a medium-sized airport in terms of cargo handling. It’s the 10th-busiest airport in the United States in regards to cargo, with over 684,000 tons of freight handled in 2012.
- Logan International was awarded the title of “Easiest Airport to Get To” in 2007 by aviation.com. This was due to the variety of ground transportation options available to and from the airport, including buses, taxis, shared ride vans, limousines, and the Logan Express.
