One of the biggest hubs in Southeast Asia is the Singapore Changi Airport, and it is also the primary airport for the civilians of Singapore. The airport is commonly referred to simply as the Changi Airport.
In terms of cargo traffic and passenger traffic the airport is also deemed one of the busiest airports in the world. As its name would imply the airport is specifically located at the eastern end of Singapore in Changi. It’s around 10 miles northeast of downtown Singapore, also called Marina Bay.
The airport sits on 5 square miles or 13 square kilometers. It is operated by the Changi Airport Group.
The Changi Airport functions as the home base of BOC Aviation, Valuair, AirAsia, Jetstar Asia Airways, Tigerair, Scoot, Silkair, Singapore Airlines Cargo, and Singapore Airlines.
The airport serves more than 100 airlines. Airlines travel to around 300 different cities in approximately 80 territories and countries worldwide. On a weekly basis Changi Airport sees around 6,600 flights. This computes to one flight every minute and a half. In 2014 the airport had nearly 54.1 passengers.

According to Skytrax the airport was recently ranked the best airport in the world. In fact, the Singapore Changi Airport has won more than 500 awards since the year 1981. In 2014 the airport had 24 new awards for “Best Airport.”
More awards are still rolling in. It has been dubbed as the best airport in Southeast Asia, Asia, and even the entire world—the reason is because of the airport’s top notch and elite services. The airport strives to set the highest standards in airport quality and service. To do this Changi Airport not only does constant physical upgrades to the terminals already in place, it also adds new facilities.
The Changi Airport is the first airport to ever be home of a Butterfly Garden.
Inside the airport walls there are a couple of gardens, one of which is home to more than 1,000 butterflies and almost 50 different species. The airport also has a rooftop sunflower garden and movie theaters offering free screenings around the clock. Travelers can even play games at the Entertainment Deck.
Before the Singapore Changi Airport was opened there were two other big airports which served the civilians of the area. The first airport was called the Seletar Airport, which was in operation from 1930-1937, and the Kallang Airport which operated from 1937-55.
The Singapore Changi Airport first opened in 1955. It had only one runway and a little passenger terminal. As the decades went on the airport was not able to cope with the heavy traffic passing through and eventually in the 70s a solution had to be found.
The government at first decided to expand the airport at Paya Lebar where it was initially built, but after the oil crisis in 73 and reconsideration they decided it would be best to relocate the airport.

Currently the airport has 3 separate terminals. The very first one, Terminal 1, opened in 1981, and almost a decade later Terminal 2 opened in 1990. Terminal 3 opened in 2008. Aside from these there has also been the Budget Terminal, which opened on March 26th, 2006, and closed shortly after on September 25th, 2012.
The Budget Terminal will soon be transformed into Terminal 4 which is scheduled to open in 2017. Changi Airport has plans to open a fifth terminal sometime in the mid-2020s. This terminal will be capable of handling 50 million passenger movements per annum. Currently the airport has a handling capacity of 66 million travelers.
