Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport (GDN) is located 12 miles northwest of Gdansk, Poland. This international airport, named after former Polish president Lech Walesa, is closely-situated to the Tricity metropolitan area of Gdansk, Sopot, and Gdynia. The airport was originally opened in 1974 near the village of Rebiechowo. The current name of the airport was acquired in 2004 after some deliberation over how Lech Walesa should be spelled, as most foreigners would not recognize the proper Polish spelling of the name with diacritics.
In 2006, Gdansk Lech Walesa served more than 1 million passengers in the year – for the first time in its history. This growth trend has continued, with the airport breaking the 3 million-passenger mark in 2014. Airlines at Gdansk Lech Walesa serve over 50 regular routes during the summer season.
